How Do I become A Cartoonist?
As a cartoonist I often receive emails from proud and enthusiastic parents lavishing praise on their teenage Johnnies artistic talents and that it's only a matter of time before the rest of the planet catches on and Johnny can buy the entire family a Lear jet. Enclosed will be a drawing of Bart Simpson or such like and a request that I help Johnny achieve his goals of stardom by providing access to editors and suitable markets . I usually respond with. Dear Johnnies Mum. Becoming a professional cartoonist requires a lot more than being able to draw Bart Simpson. While artistic talent is helpful the modern cartoonist is 80% business marketing and 20% drawing. A new cartoonist needs to identify his or her market, develop an individual and recognizable style, and be prepared for rejection..and loads of it. What type of cartoonist does Johnny want to be? A gag artist, comic strip, editorial cartoonist,general illustrator, or all of the above. I would recommend investing in some 'how to' cartoon books of which the net has in abundance. These will cover drawing,lettering,speech bubbles,character development and so on. Johnny also needs to build up a portfolio of work to show prospective editors. The modern cartoonist also needs to work the internet with a website presence and the ability to market that site to search engines with effective SEO. I wish Johnny all the best with his cartooning ambitions. Usually I receive no replies or some bordering on abuse if I dare include some critique on Johnnies work . 'his stuff is better then yours','you don't know what your talking about, 'Johnny was very upset after reading your comments',etc etc. Some people don't actually want advice they just want to hear how brilliant they are. My favorite question? 'How do I get ideas?'
